We are training our Genealogists who will be providing ancestry research and genealogy research at our Stuart and Caren Shipero Jewish Genealogy Center at the developing Jewish museum in Buffalo.

The Developing Jewish museum in Buffalo is launching a new genealogy initiative designed to connect individuals, families, and communities to their histories through research, storytelling, and shared knowledge. As a first-of-its-kind model in our region, this program brings together education, archival resources, and trained genealogists to support meaningful exploration of personal and collective heritage.

What We Offer:

• Guided genealogy research support

• Access to archival materials and historical resources

• Workshops and educational programming

• One-on-one consultation opportunities

• Community-based storytelling and documentation

Our approach centers on accessibility, making genealogy approachable for beginners while offering depth for those with more experience.

Genealogy Training & Hiring

As part of this initiative, the developing Jewish museum in Buffalo is developing a Genealogy Boot Camp—a training program designed to prepare individuals with the foundational skills needed to support research, assist visitors, and engage with archival materials. This 2026 session is currently full, but opportunities will return in the future.

Participants will gain experience in:

• Research methods and documentation

• Understanding historical records

• Supporting public inquiries

• Ethical and respectful storytelling practices

Following training, participants may be considered for paid opportunities to work with the museum as trained genealogists, supporting programs, research services, and public engagement initiatives.

Why This Matters

Genealogy is more than tracing names—it is a way to understand migration, identity, and the connections that shape communities. This program positions the museum as a space where history is not only preserved, but actively explored and shared.

First of Its Kind

This initiative represents a new model for museum-based genealogy programming—integrating education, workforce development, and community engagement. By training and employing genealogists within the museum, we are creating sustainable opportunities while expanding access to historical research.
